grooming woes

Au naturel, Brazilian, bohemian, landing strip, or va-jazzled. No matter how you style it, the way you choose to care for your pubic hair is an entirely personal choice. If you’re coiffed, however, the skin becomes more exposed and prone to razor burn, redness, ingrown hairs and other bikini bumps.

Here are a few grooming struggles that you might encounter down there and what you can do about them.

ingrown hairs

Simply put, ingrown hairs grow back into the skin instead of up and out of the skin’s surface. Ingrown hairs often look like red + irritated bumps, and if infected, can form into pus-filled bumps (pustules). Because pubic hair is often more coarse and curly than the hair on any other part of the body, it’s common for ingrown pubic hair bumps to pop-up after hair removal. Ingrown hairs on the vulva can also be caused by over-shaving.

When a hair begins to grow inward rather than outward, it triggers an immune response telling your body to react to the ingrown pubic hair as if it were a foreign invader. This may lead to itching, redness, pain, or swelling. Ingrown hair in the pubic area/bikini line can also be caused or made worse by chafing from working out, any type of rubbing skin-on-skin or cloth-on-skin, and/or friction during sex.

razor burn

Razor burn is inflammation of the skin most commonly caused by friction or shaving. If you’ve ever shaved your pubic hair down there and instantly felt sensitivity, that’s probably razor burn.  Razor burn is annoying and looks like redness, bumps, irritation or discomfort and can feel like chafing or a sunburn. And, for those of us with dry or hypersensitive intimate skin, razor burn in the bikini area can be even more painful. Other common areas prone to razor burn are faces, necks, underarms, and legs.

folliculitis

Folliculitis is inflammation and infection of the hair follicles. In the absence of proper treatment, it can become chronic. The symptoms of folliculitis are typically similar to those of a pimple, which are red, inflamed, and infected pustules. Usually, infected hair follicles start isolated, but they can spread rapidly. Disruption of the 'cap' or scab can cause the bacteria to spread and heighten the infection. The severity of folliculitis varies from mild to acute. Folliculitis is usually a bacterial infection, but there is also fungal Folliculitis.

how can i get rid of razor bumps, folliculitis, and ingrown hairs?

exfoliate

To better fend off ingrown hairs and razor burn on intimate vulva skin, it’s helpful to exfoliate to get rid of dead skin cells that can trap hair follicles. We’re not huge fans of harsh physical scrubs that can exacerbate skin inflammation, which is why we’ve created natural intimate care products filled to the brim with potent yet gentle botanicals and fruit extracts like lactic acid that exfoliate without over-drying. The Exfoliating Ingrown Solution gently exfoliates and clarifies your delicate skin without drying it out.
